My husband was in the process of getting discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard. I and our five-year-old son were living with his parents, waiting for him to come home.
Every week for about a month he would call and tell me the paperwork was almost finished and he would be home that weekend. Then something would go wrong and he would call back and say that something went wrong–paperwork got lost or there was an error. He was getting frustrated.
Meanwhile, I had been to a Billy Graham movie with my youngest sister-in-law and asked Jesus to forgive my sins and save me. We started going to church together. It was great. For the first time in my life I felt free, accepted, loved by someone other than my husband. Church was exciting and I was learning things. When I got home I couldn’t wait until it was time to go back.
So the last time my husband called and said he thought he would be coming home that weekend, but he sure wasn’t going to count on it, I decided to pray. Wow! I could actually talk to the God of the universe, the God who sent His only begotten Son to take the penalty for my sin. And I had learned enough about God to believe He would really hear my prayer. So that night I asked God to tell me (somehow) when Tom would be coming home so I could have his favorite meal ready for him. That night I had a dream that a huge, wall-sized telegram had been delivered to me. It said, “Tom will be home on Friday.” I believed it was a dream from God.
The next morning when I went downstairs, I asked my mother-in-law to stop at the grocery store and pick up the ingredients I would need to make Tom’s favorite meal (meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and creamed corn).
That was Friday, the day after God sent the telegram. He did arrive home, late. His mom and dad were at meetings; our son was asleep upstairs. I had him all to myself for a couple of hours. I had the meal ready so all I had to do was heat it up. That was my first experience with prayer, and it was awesome!
Just a quick note: God doesn’t often speak to people in dreams because we have His word, the Authorized 1611 King James Bible. It is complete and without error. (If you don’t believe that and choose another “bible”, I believe if God can speak through a donkey as He did in Numbers 22:20-31), He can use anything.

Loved reading this, dear friend. I’m so glad we share this precious faith and can rejoice together in the ways our God answers prayer! We are so blessed. *I* am so blessed to have met you all those years ago…what a blessing you are! ❤️

Believe me, you are a HUGE blessing to me. The only friend (other than Jesus) that I’ve had longer than you passed away 2 or 3 years ago. We knew her when we lived in West Virginia. We used to walk through her woods and pray together. But I will see her again when Gabriel blows the trumpet–after I say hello to Jesus.
