What Is Love?

Do you ever feel that you are the lowest creature on earth? Do you feel that you are so unworthy of love that you push people away? Do you tell yourself that you are so bad even God can’t love you? I have been there, felt that way. I understand. I used to feel that I had no right to take up space on this planet. There have been times when I tried to commit suicide. But that was a long time ago. Would you like to know what changed me?

Psalm 139 in the King James Bible tells us (me a few years ago) that God paid minute, infinite detail in creating me. He, with great deliberation shaped every fingernail, every toenail, the shapes of my eyes, nose, lips. He chose with careful consideration the color and hues of my eyes and hair. He shaped my hands and feet, my head. Why would the Creator of the universe, the Almighty, all-powerful, all-knowing God, create me? Why would He pay attention to my development in the womb?

And then, after creating me just the way He wanted me to be, He sent His only begotten Son to pay the penalty for my sins (and we are all sinners; there are no perfect people) so that, if I put my trust in Him, and accept His free gift of salvation, I can go to heaven and spend all eternity with this wonderful Saviour. Am I perfect now? No way. I still sin. I waste a lot of the time God gives me on this earth for my own selfish purposes instead of reaching out to others. Sometimes I don’t do the things I know I should. Sometimes I’m just plain selfish and self-centered. But God still loves me. He still waits for me to turn to Him, ask His forgiveness (which He freely gives), and try again to do what’s right.

“But I’ve killed so many people as a soldier. God can’t forgive me.” I have heard people say this. The truth is: You are judging yourself more harshly than God will. The only sin that sends people to hell is rejecting God’s free gift of salvation through the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross.
