#School Shootings

This is such a tragic subject. Everyone seems to have an opinion on how to solve the problem, and yet there is such heated disagreement on the way it should be handled or solved.

I grew up in the 60’s, graduated high school in 1970. Never have I had to face anything like what’s happening today in our society. My children were never at risk for this senseless killing. It simply wasn’t done. People owned guns back then but they were never carried to school, at least not in the areas where we lived. We heard about gang killings in the big cities like New York and Chicago, but even the gang killings were not in schools.

This current situation makes my emotions run the gamut: anger, frustration, and fear for all of our children across the nation. So here is my thought or opinion of what we can, and perhaps should do.

All public buildings, but especially our schools, should have all glass windows and doors made of bullet-proof, shatter-proof material (plexiglass?). Every school should have a system that automatically locks all of the doors leading in or out of the buildings. They can be wired to open automatically in case of fire or other natural disaster, and manually opened by a teacher or administrator.  Tardy students would need to call the office to let them know the student is going to be late and about what time they expect to arrive. Upon arrival an armed guard should meet the student at the door, perform the weapons check and escort the student to the office to procure a pass to class. Lastly, every person entering the building for any reason should be checked for weapons, so no one can conceal a weapon, whether it be a gun or knife, into the buildings.

Banning guns, and stricter gun laws will not solve the problem because criminals, those intent on doing harm, regardless of mental state, will always be able to get weapons. If we start taking away the right to bear arms, or diminishing the ability to get them, it won’t stop the criminal who intends to kill. Most criminals don’t go to gun shows or shops to purchase their weapons. They buy them illegally from a friend or street dealer, or they steal them.

This is not just a physical battle. This is a spiritual battle: the battle between good and evil.

Eph 6:10  Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
Eph 6:11  Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Eph 6:12  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Eph 6:13  Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Eph 6:14  Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
Eph 6:15  And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
Eph 6:16  Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
Eph 6:17  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

2Co_10:4  (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

Satan knows his time to wreak havoc is running out. He roams about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. He wants to destroy our homes, our families. He wants us strung out on drugs, alcohol, and feeding ourselves on hatred, cruelty, lust, and a disdain for God, the Lord Jesus Christ. He wants parents to hate God for allowing this to happen. It is not God’s fault. God gives everyone the choice to accept or reject Him and the free gift of salvation through the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross. He died for our sins; and we are all sinners.

Joh 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Joh 3:17  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Joh 3:18  He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Joh 3:19  And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
Joh 3:20  For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
Joh 3:21  But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Rom 3:10  As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
Rom 3:11  There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
Rom 3:12  They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Rom 3:13  Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
Rom 3:14  Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
Rom 3:15  Their feet are swift to shed blood:
Rom 3:16  Destruction and misery are in their ways:
Rom 3:17  And the way of peace have they not known:
Rom 3:18  There is no fear of God before their eyes.
Rom 3:19  Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
Rom 3:20  Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Rom 5:6  For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
Rom 5:7  For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
Rom 5:8  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Rom 10:9  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Rom 10:10  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Rom 10:13  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Unfortunately, we will never stop all of the killing because Satan will always be around. So if we want our children to be safe we need to do three things:

  1. Pray continually for their safety, that God will put a hedge of protection around them and keep them from harm.
  2. In order for God to hear our prayers we must have a personal relationship with Him by asking Jesus to save us from the bondage of sin.
  3. We must remember that God promised He would always be with us (those who are saved as described above) because this world is evil and we will suffer hardship and tragedy.

Joh 14:1  Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
Joh 14:2  In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
Joh 14:3  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

When my time on this earth is over I have the assurance, that because I have accepted God’s free gift of salvation by accepting Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I will be in a much better place. My children have this same assurance because they also have asked Jesus to save them, and are doing their best to walk in obedience to Him.

Where will you and your children be?
